But what about on your way to work, home from work, out walking the dog, heading home from yoga class, or strolling to the farmer’s market on a Sunday morning? Gigwalk lets you turn formerly unproductive jaunts into cold, hard deposits into your PayPal account, by completing “gigs” with the help of your smartphone. The 2-year-old app and service started out iOS only, but on Thursday Gigwalk launched an Android app as well, vastly increasing its pool of potential Gigwalkers. The company expects the free Android app to double its user base, currently at 340,000 workers. So what happens when you install Gigwalk app to your iPhone or Android phone? You sign up for an account, then you’ll see a list or a map showing all of the available gigs near your location. Since you’re a newbie, at first you'll be offered more basic gigs, described to TechHive by founder and CTO Matt Crampton as “lower cost-of-failure jobs.” They pay about $5 to $8 and include tasks like taking photos of a business to be used in search listing, or checking out how products are displayed on a particular store's shelves and reporting back. You pick a gig, check out the details of exactly what’s involved, and apply for permission to take it on. None of the gigs are particularly hard, and they’re all broken down into every step you have to take, with forms to fill in and submit right from the app. So you won’t be left to your own devices wondering how to get started—you just dive in and knock out the work. Once you’ve completed all the tasks and submitted your time-stamped, location-aware report, Gigwalk passes it along to the company who submitted the gig, and deposits your fee into your PayPal account. Gigwalk keeps stats on each Gigwalker’s performance: the types of gigs chosen, promptness in finishing them, attempted gigs that weren’t finished, and so on. As you complete more gigs, you’ll get access to more skilled and better-paying gigs, and Gigwalk’s data-driven approach helps companies fill their needs by finding workers who have proven track records in specific areas, like retail merchandising or field photography.
